CONTEMPORARY AND OUTSIDER ART
"Let It All Hang Out on 66"____Acrylic on Canvas 16" x 24" $200.
Jay Marvin started painting seriously when he couldn't do much else. His story is not too different than other "outsider" artists in that regard. Most other outsiders, however, do not have the long strange trip that has been his life up to now. Most outsiders are marginalized and isolated by the world. Marvin is a man of the world who has isolated and marginalized himself. (And nearly took himself completely out of his misery in a suicide attempt.) So I find it difficult to write about Mr. Marvin. Better that you go off site and read this story by Douglas Brown in the Denver Post. http://www.denverpost.com/ci_18187935
This well written article will tell you about how Marvin is a published author too, but mostly it will tell you of his struggle and rise to fame as a bombastic leftist radio personality who drove ratings by insulting and bullying call-in guests..........and how he had that moment. Changling.
Now Mr. Marvin is still struggling. His health issues have become dibilitating. He paints when he can. And when he can, he leaves it all on the rag paper. Iconoclastic, he invents his own iconography. His images are not pleasant but there is a symetry in the dance they do together. He's painting the music in his head.
Here are a few pieces of his work.
"Improvement Property" Acrylic on Canvas 18" x 18" $200.
"The Meek Shall Not Inherit the Fucking Power Ball"...Acrylic on Canvas 16" x 20" $200.
"Indian Smoke Shop"______________Acrylic on 100% Rag Paper 22" x 30" $250.
