JAMES "BUDDY" SNIPES
Buddy lives out in the woods in rural SE Alabama in a house that has few modern amenities but lots of room for his imagination to roam. Years ago he started making things he said he just "liked" out of things he found in his natural world.
The first piece I ever saw was a stump/person sculpture brought in by a collector who said she had something she knew I'd love to see. She put it down, I looked at it, and it looked back at me. Curiously.
That seems to be a quality he evokes in this piece.
39" Tall x 18" Wide x 21" Deep
The following two pieces are "Mermaids" fo the Buddy Snipes variety. According to him, his mama used to scare the kids to keep them from going to the river by themselves. She told them terrible "Mermaids" lived in the river that would eat children and chicken and anything else they could find. This is how he represents those creatures. His collectors are invited to speculate on what the mermaids have swallowed.
This "Mermaid" seems pleasant enough. Seems to have eaten a white chicken and, hopefully, a giant insect with a human face.
16" x 34" Metal sheeting cut out with a tree limb "frame". $395.
This "Mermaid" seems a little less friendly, but still, her eyes are kind, despite swallowing the ghost of a monkey.
18" x 40" Metal sheeting cut out with a tree limb "frame". $395.
Assemblage is what Mr. Snipes excells in and this example is my husband's favorite.
This construction appears to be an alligator valise, complete with handle.
